There isn't one perfect campervan

Living with It

How does it work in the real world?

Power, heating, water, solar, campsites and off-grid use. What sounds good on paper isn't always what works in practice.

Real days.
Real decisions.

Choose a setup that supports your routine — and try it before you rely on it.

Step 01: The everyday essentials

These systems work together. Start with what you use, then plan how to replenish it.

Power

What runs each day, and how will you recharge? Consider the fridge, lights, devices and other regular loads.

Heating

Think beyond a warm evening. Check fuel, electrical demand, ventilation and comfort on colder trips.

Ask: can you stay comfortable overnight?

Water

Match storage to cooking, washing and refill opportunities. Plan waste-water capacity and easy emptying.

Solar

Solar can help replenish your battery. Weather, shade and season change what it produces.

Step 02: Campsites or nights without hook-up?

Campsites with services

Facilities can make routines easier — but check what your pitch actually includes.

  • Electricity — supply limits and compatible equipment
  • Water — filling points and distance from your pitch
  • Washing — showers, toilets and opening hours
  • Waste — the right disposal points

Nights without hook-up

Plan what you can use between charging, refill and waste stops.

  • Power — usable battery capacity and charging
  • Warmth — fuel, electricity and weather
  • Water — fresh supply and waste storage
  • Stops — permission, access and the next services

Off-grid describes your services, not permission to camp. Check each overnight location's rules.

Step 03: Follow a real day

Morning

Make a drink, use the tap and put the bed away. Can someone cook while the other gets ready?

Afternoon

Return with wet shoes and coats. Is there somewhere to sit, dry kit and charge what you need?

Evening & overnight

Cook, wash up, relax and keep warm. What remains in your battery and water supply by morning?

A weekend trial reveals the small jobs that a specification sheet misses.

Step 04: Try the less-than-perfect day

  • A cloudy day

How will you recharge when solar contributes less?

  • A cold evening

What does heating need, and where will damp kit dry?

  • A longer stay

What changes if you do not drive for a couple of days?

  • A full waste tank

Can you empty it easily at a suitable service point?

  • A rainy afternoon

    Can everyone live comfortably indoors?

  • An everyday fault

Can you reach service points and find the equipment instructions?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use, ventilation, servicing and cold-weather care.

The best setup is the one that works when the weather and the day don't go to plan.
