Layout & Beds
What's the right campervan layout and bed for you?
Rock & roll, fixed bed, rear lounge or pop-top? There isn't one perfect layout – it's about how you travel, how you live and what you're prepared to compromise on.
Layout & beds: the quick answer
Choose a rock & roll bed if…
you want a more compact campervan, like having daytime seating and want a bed that quickly converts at night.
Consider a fixed bed if…
you value sleeping comfort, don't want to make the bed every night and prefer a simple, easy-to-live-with layout.
Think about a rear lounge or family layout if…
you're travelling with more people, want more indoor seating or need extra sleeping space.
But…
start with how many people need to travel, sit and sleep. They aren't always the same, and getting this clear first will lead you to the right layout.
Start with people, not beds
Before you look at layouts, work out three key numbers. They're not always the same and getting this right will narrow your options immediately.
How many people need to travel?
These must have proper seat belts.
How many need to sit comfortably?
Think about dining, relaxing and bad weather days.
How many need to sleep?
Every night or just occasionally?

What matters more to you – how the campervan works during the day, or how it works at night?
The common layouts
Here are the most common campervan layouts, and what they offer.

Rock & roll bed
Flexible daytime space with a seat/bed system. Popular for couples and small families.

Fixed bed
Always ready to sleep, but uses permanent floor space.

Rear lounge
Great living space that often converts to a bed.

Pop-top bed
Adds sleeping capacity without using floor space.
The trade-off
A layout can look fantastic in a showroom, but it's important to think about the compromises you'll live with every day.
Daytime living
- Space to sit, cook and relax
- Easy access to kitchen and storage
- Flexibility for changing plans

Nighttime convenience
- How easy is it to make the bed?
- Where do you sleep and store things?
- Is it comfortable for everyone?

Think about a normal day
Imagine a typical day on a trip. How does the layout work for you at each stage?

7:30am
Can you make coffee without dismantling the bed?

10:00am
Does everyone have a suitable travelling seat?

4:00pm
Can everyone sit comfortably inside if it's raining?

7:00pm
Is there space to cook and for others to sit?

10:30pm
What needs to move before the bed can be made?

2:00am
Can you get to the toilet without climbing over someone?
Sleeping capacity isn't travelling capacity
A van that sleeps four doesn't automatically carry four people. Always check:
- Number of designated travelling seats
- Which seats have seat belts
- Whether child seats can be fitted
- Whether ISOFIX is available (if important)
- That any seating installation has the correct documentation/approval

UK guidance
Always make sure travelling seats comply with current UK regulations and that any aftermarket seats are professionally installed and documented.
